2007 Joint Trial Call Status of Cases as of Wednesday, January 10, 2007

The following cases have been placed on the joint trial call that will begin on January 8, 2007. Cases on that call will proceed on a "trailing" calendar to be tried as reached. The judges contributing cases to the joint call are Judges Bucklo, Coar, Gettleman, Kennelly, and Lefkow. Any case may be assigned to any of the contributing judges. You can estimate the date on which your case will be called for trial by its location on the list, as, ordinarily, cases will be called in listed order and each trial should last no more than 5 days. As trials are completed (or cases settle), the list will be updated to indicate which cases are currently on trial and the judges to whom those cases are assigned. Copies of the updated list will be available on the judges’ web pages. It will be necessary for all attorneys and parties to keep themselves and their witnesses ready for trial on no more than 48 hours notice. The column titled "Judge" indicates the judge to whom the case was originally assigned; the column titled “Assigned Judge” indicates the judge who will try the case.

The judges participating in the joint trial call intend to use, in appropriate cases, certain of the concepts proposed by the Seventh Circuit Bar Association Jury Project Commission for improving the process of jury trials. These may include: the use of a twelve person jury; the use of a written questionnaire in the voir dire process; giving the jury, at the outset of the trial, substantive instructions on the claims at issue; allowing jurors to submit questions to be asked of witnesses; and giving the jury instructions on selection of a foreperson and the conduct of deliberations.
