Clerk’s Office Drop Box For Filing Documents

Location:
1st Floor Elevator Lobbies (North and South)

Availability: 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Pursuant to the Court’s General Order of June 16, 1998, the court installed drop boxes which may be used to deposit documents for filing during hours when the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse is open to the public. The Courthouse is open from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays.

A time stamp has been installed in the drop box. A document will be recorded as filed on the date that has been entered on the document using the drop box time stamp. Clerk’s Office staff will empty the drop box a number of times each business day.  The use of the drop boxes is encouraged even during those times when the Clerk's Office is open for business in order to ease elevator congestion and building traffic.

Guidelines for Using The Drop Box

  • All documents filed in the drop box must comply with existing local rules and with all noticing and filing requirements as directed by individual judges and with any specific drop box usage restrictions.* Any document placed in the drop box not in compliance with the above will not be accepted as filed.

* Senior United States District Court Judge Shadur has such a restriction.

  • Stamp each document using the time-stamp provided.

Please note:  When a document is removed from the drop box and the time-stamp on the document is illegible or missing, the document will be stamped as having been filed on that business day.

  • All documents must include the name and telephone number of the filer so that they can be contacted if any problems arise concerning documents placed in the drop box.
  • Do not place emergency matters in the drop box.
  • Do not place cash in the drop box.
